Oops! Japan #20 — Tax-Free ≠ Duty-Free

(免税と「デューティーフリー」は別物)Stop Confusing the Two Before It’s Too Late 税金が戻るのはどっち?

English: Many travelers mix these up:

Tax-Free = Available at many regular stores (Don Quijote, electronics shops, etc.). You show your passport at the time of purchase if spending over ¥5000-¥5500.

Duty-Free = Found only after airport security. Completely different concept.

Reddit users repeatedly warn: If you forget your passport, you lose the chance for tax-free shopping. No passport, no refund.
