Oops! Japan #25 — Hotel Guest Limits Are Serious Business
Why You Might Be Denied a Room — Even With Kids
English:
Booked a room for four and thought squeezing in five would be no big deal? Think again — this is Japan.
One traveler shared a warning letter from their hotel, reminding guests of a strict policy:
"Rooms for 4 guests can only accommodate 4 adults (age 7+) and 2 children (under 6) who sleep with their parents. No extra bedding. Overcapacity may lead to being refused at check-in."
Yes — even toddlers count. And no, you can’t just let them “share a futon” unless it’s clearly within the rules.
Why so strict?
Japan’s Fire Prevention Law requires hotels to strictly observe guest limits.
It’s not about comfort — it’s about safety and legal compliance.
Hotel staff have no flexibility to “let it slide” without risking penalties.
Even if you're used to sneaking in a fifth person elsewhere, it won’t fly in Japan. Some hotels may refuse your stay entirely if the number doesn’t match the booking.
What to do:
Always count children when booking — even infants.
If in doubt, contact the hotel directly before your stay.
Book an extra room or upgrade if needed. It's better than being turned away at 10pm.
Japan may be polite, but when it comes to fire code, they don't play.
