Oops! Japan #34 — Left? Right? It’s a Sidewalk Puzzle

Why Walking in Japan Sometimes Feels Like a Video Game Maze

English:

In Japan, people drive on the left side of the road — so naturally, you’d expect pedestrians to follow the same rule, right?

Wrong. Or at least… not always.

There’s no consistent rule for which side of the sidewalk to walk on in Japan. It depends on:

The city (Tokyo and Osaka often differ)

The street layout

The flow of people at that moment

Whether you’re on stairs, escalators, or crosswalks

Sometimes you’ll see signs asking you to “Keep Left” or “Keep Right” — and the next street might say the opposite.

Common Confusion Points:

In Tokyo, escalators: stand on the left, walk on the right

In Osaka, escalators: stand on the right, walk on the left

Sidewalks? Free-for-all, especially during rush hour

So what should you do?

Tip:

Just follow the flow. Look ahead and mirror what the people in front of you are doing. Don’t try to “correct” others — just blend in.
