🚽 Public Toilets Are Everywhere (and They’re Clean!)

One of the best things about Japan: free, clean public restrooms.

Found in metros, malls, parks, even convenience stores

Usually stocked with toilet paper (but not always soap)

Western-style toilets are common, but squat types still exist

日本の公衆トイレは無料＆清潔で世界トップレベル。 地下鉄、デパート、公園、コンビニなど、探せば必ず見つかります。

💡 Pro tip: Carry a small hand towel or tissues, just in case.

☔ No Umbrella? No Problem

Sudden rain? Don’t panic. Cheap umbrellas are sold literally everywhere — convenience stores, drugstores, even vending machines.

傘を忘れても、どこでも買えます。 500円程度で透明ビニール傘が買えるので、現地調達がベター。

🚦Crosswalk Etiquette: Wait for the Green

Even when there's no car in sight, locals wait for the green pedestrian signal.

たとえ車が来ていなくても、日本人は信号が青になるまで待つのが基本です。 海外の常識とは違うかも知れませんが、郷に入れば郷に従え。

This might seem rigid, but it reflects Japan’s culture of order and safety.

🧼 Soap, Dryers, and Clean Hands

Public restrooms usually have soap and hand dryers, but not always.

ソープはほぼ常設ですが、乾燥機がないところもあるので、ハンカチやペーパーを持っておくと安心です。

Also, you’ll often find signs reminding people to wash their hands and gargle — it’s part of common hygiene here.

📷 Take Photos… But Mind Your Surroundings

Japan is incredibly photogenic — but always:

Ask before photographing people

Avoid taking photos in shrines, temples, or museums without permission

Never photograph people’s homes or license plates

🍡 Try What You Don’t Know

If you see something unfamiliar on a menu or shelf, try it. There’s a reason it’s there — and you just might love it.

🤝 Politeness = Better Service

You don’t need perfect Japanese to be welcomed warmly.

A simple “Arigatou gozaimasu” goes a long way

Smile, be patient, and you’ll often be treated with surprising kindness

Most Japanese don’t expect you to speak Japanese — but they may also not speak English confidently. They may freeze, or apologize unnecessarily.

日本では、英語を話せる人も多いですが、「話せません」と遠慮されることも多いです。 怖がらずに、ゆっくり・簡単な言葉で伝えると、ちゃんと通じます。
